In our research model we combined personality attributes and two common technology acceptance models to determine factors projecting perfor- mance in the game and projected later use of business simulation games in gen- eral. We found that main drivers for usage are performance expectancy and trans- fer of skill, i.e., the perceived applicability of the learned knowledge and skills for the later work. In order to qualify decision makers to understand the fundamental principles of quality management in production networks, a game-based simulation and learning environment is developed, which can furthermore be used to understand how human factors influence the quality of decisions in complex production networks. Previous studies have shown that underlying factors must exist, which predict the players’ performance. It is currently unexplored, which factors are contributing to high performance. To deeper investigate which human factors are critical for supply chain success and to further refine the quality management game a series of studies were examined. As expected, expertise had a great impact on performance, however contrary to the expectations cognitive skills had none. The refined decision dashboard, with seamlessly integrated self-adapting visualizations on key performance indicators, had a significant positive impact on game performance. The studies suggest that the developed game is a valuable contribution for the qualification of quality managers, as the quality of decision increased.</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-signature field--type-string-long field--label-hidden field__item">Stiller, S., Falk, B., Philipsen, R., Brauner, P., Schmitt, R., Ziefle, M.: A Game-based Approach to Understand Human Factors in Supply Chains and Quality Management. Insufficiently understood human and social factors further increase this complexity. Game-based learning environments and business simulation games can reduce this complexity by identifying and understanding the contributing human factor. Business simulation games can be used (1) to identify and quantify human as well as social factors influencing the effectivity and efficiency, (2) to assess the aptitude of prospective employees and identify suitable training interventions, (3) to improve management and production software, and (4) to present effective, efficient, and entertaining training environments. By allowing employees to investigate cause-and-effect relationships of simulated manufacturing and business environments, they can test and understand the consequences of their actions in safe environments. In this paper, we report a practical case of a business simulation game for conveying quality management strategies. The development of the game is presented along the definition of learning objectives, the underlying System Dynamics model, and the design of the user interface. The evaluation of the game reveals that human factors relate to the simulation’s metrics. Finally, we give guidelines to design and develop game-based simulation and training environments.</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-signature field--type-string-long field--label-hidden field__item">Brauner, P., Ziefle, M.: How to Train Employees, identify Task-relevant Human Factors, and Improve Software Systems with Business Simulation Games. Both technical challenges as well as the integration of human employees with their diverse abilities, wants and needs have to be considered. Due to a growing number of product variants, shorter lead times and global supply chains, the planning of production systems is getting increasingly difficult, both on the technical and on the human level. Its highly volatile and uncertain character is intensified by the growing complexity and results in shorter decision times for ramp-up management. In order to handle the increasing complexity, the humans decision makers must be adequately trained for the ramp-up period. Therefore, the influential factors and their magnitude from both, the technical and the human perspective must be identified and understood. This knowledge can help to manage the complexity of ramp-up processes, reduce the disturbances within the process, and strengthen their overall resilience against failures. For an adequate understanding of the human and technical factors that relate to ramp-up processes an experimental framework is necessary. This framework should support the identification and quantification of socio-technical factors, enabling practitioners and researchers to model suitable interventions. In this article we propose, develop, and evaluate a business simulation game that serves as such an empirical framework. The game is furthermore suitable to train managers before the ramp-up process and the achieved performance in the business simulation game may be used to evaluate a person’s suitability for the task and to identify individual training potential.</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-signature field--type-string-long field--label-hidden field__item">1. Wrong decisions by decision makers leads to insufficient behavior and lower performance not only for the decision maker, but also for other stakeholders along the supply chain. In order to study the complex decision situation, we developed a supply chain game in which we studied experimentally the decisions of different stakeholder within the chain. 121 participants took part in a web-based supply chain game. We investigated the effects of gender, personality and technical competency on the performance within the supply chain. Also, learnability and the effect of presence of point-of-sale data are investigated. Performance depended on the position within the chain and fluctuating stock levels were observed in form of the bullwhip effect. Furthermore, we found that risk taking had an impact on the performance and that the performance improved after the first round of the game.</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-signature field--type-string-long field--label-hidden field__item">Brauner, P., Runge, S., Groten, M., Schuh, G., Ziefle, M.: Human Factors in Supply Chain Management – Decision Making in Complex Logistic Scenarios. Therefore several projects that aim at increasing the interest in computer programming and computer science in general use robots as a cornerstone in their course concepts. Handing out robotic kits to the school students who have participated in the courses is not feasible, thus the learning content cannot be repeated and enhanced at home. We developed a flexible multi-user simulation environment for LEGO Mindstorms NXT robots which is closely integrated into our pedagogical teaching scenarios. User tests show that this environment can be successfully used to increase the long-term outreach of our courses. © 2011 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.</div> </div> <div class="field field--name-field-signature field--type-string-long field--label-hidden field__item">Kammer, T., Brauner, P., Leonhardt, T., Schroeder, U.: Simulating LEGO Mindstorm Robots to Facilitate Teaching Computer Programming to School Students.
