Abstract

Lifelogging technologies have the potential to facilitate and enrich the everyday life of younger as well as older people. On the one hand, tracking and logging of data about activities and behavior support an active lifestyle. On the other hand, tracking medical data and movements support increasing safety by detecting, e.g., emergencies or falls. From a technical perspective, a variety of technologies enable lifelogging and are already available on the market. Instead, there is very little knowledge about the perception and acceptance of lifelogging technologies from users' socio-ethical perspective. Hence, this paper presents research results from four online survey studies (n = 1107) aiming at covering a broad range of lifelogging applications and reaching diverse target groups. Being based on insights gathered from the quantitative data collection, this paper derives guidelines for integrating ethical and social perspectives in lifelogging technology development and emphasizes gaps within the research landscape regarding its perception and acceptance.

Abstract

A pronounced deficit of physical activity is one of the challenges in today’s societies. Lacking the minimum of activity recommended for a healthy lifestyle can be avoided by so-called life-logging technologies. However, usage is still low. To understand what factors contribute to an acceptance and use of these technologies, we conducted a quantitative online study with users and non-users. In total, 412 people have participated, 225 of them active users of life-logging technologies and 187 non-users. It was found that individual user characteristics shape its acceptance. For instance, the goals for possible behavior change, which the use of life-logging devices can support, differ significantly between users and non-users. Furthermore, the study reveals that factors such as age, motives for physical activity, and privacy concerns are key determinants for projected acceptance of life-logging technologies.

Abstract

Maintaininggoodhealthgainsimportance,especiallywithincreased life-expectancy. However, digitalization leads to more and more jobs that happen sitting down. So-called life-logging technologies, apps and specialized devices meant to record, e.g., steps and heart rate, can support people in staying active and, by extension, healthy. The possible motives behind their use are manifold, ranging from relinquishing responsibility to receiving ready-made visualizations for the recorded data. To understand which are the most important to both users and non-users, a MaxDiff study was conducted (N = 409). It was found that visualization was indeed the highest rated reason for using life- logging technologies. Interestingly, gamification aspects such as badges or competition were rejected as applicable motives. The results provide further insights into user requirements for the design and development of life-logging technologies.

Abstract

Sedentary behavior and lack of exercise pose a threat to both individual health and the viability of health-care systems and societies. Portable fitness trackers as prominent persuasive technologies are seen as a way to in- crease the level of physical activity. Yet, despite their technical capabilities, their affordability, and their ad- vantages in regard to increased physical activity, they are neither used across the population, nor for long periods of time. To understand if and how product design influences acceptance and projected use, we evaluated users’ preferences of using wearables, using a conjoint analysis approach with 412 participants of a wide age spectrum. Besides different relative importances of product properties (privacy design, perceived utility, accuracy, motivational design are rated from most to least important), three user segments with distinct technical requirements were identified (data protectors, benefit maximizers, facts enthusiasts). The three segments differ not only in product preference but also regarding other user factors. We presume that a broader and more sustainable use of wearables can be achieved when tailoring information and communication strategies alongside with the requirements of these user segments.
